Governors' Camp

Overview

Governors' Camp is one of the Masai Mara's oldest camps and most authentic safari lodges and combines old-style charm with 21st-century creature comforts in the heart of East Africa’s prime wildlife area.

What can you do at Governors' Camp?

Originally built for the exclusive use of Kenya’s colonial governors, it still offers one of the best classic safari experiences anywhere. Set along the Mara River, it provides extraordinary sightings of hippo & crocodile and fantastic bird-watching. Game drives in the Masai Mara National Park are offered three times a day, departing at sunrise, late morning and in the afternoon

The 37 luxury tents each have an en suite bathroom and private veranda, with one of the greatest shows on earth right on their doorstep. Everything is under canvas, all tents have en suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water and flushing toilets. There is a bar tent with deck overlooking the Mara River and dining tent with views over the plains, as well as a souvenir shop and spa tent.

Governors' Camp has been awarded a Silver Eco Rating from Eco-Tourism Kenya due to their sustainable tourism practices in place in camp.

When to visit Governors' Camp

Located in the heart of the Masai Mara, game viewing will be a key feature during your stay at Governors' Camp and there is never a downtime in this respect due to the abundance of wildlife on-site throughout the year. However, the key attraction for any visit to the Masai Mara will tend to be to witness the Wildebeest Migration. A year-long spectacle, the migration usually reaches the Masai Mara between July and October, so you would be advised to book your stay at Governors' Camp for around this time, where you will be guaranteed excellent views of nature's greatest phenomenon.

Highlights

Our Thoughts

One of the original and still one of the best authentic tented safari lodges in the Masai Mara. Great location for game-viewing and close to the launch site for the wonderful early morning balloon rides. The lodge also operates its own aircraft to Mfangano Island on Lake Victoria, which makes for an unusual twin centre trip.
