Sand Rivers Selous

Overview

On the banks of the Rufiji River, Sand Rivers Selous offers a wonderfully varied safari experience as guests explore this remote part of the reserve by open vehicle, on foot and by boat.

The open fronted rooms look out onto the river making them an ideal spot to pass an afternoon between safari activities. The variety of wildlife is what draws many people to stay here and with a variety of ways to view it, guests are assured of a truly unique safari experience. There is also the chance to spend an evening “fly camping” – a fantastic way to spend a night, deep in the bush and getting really close to nature.

Highlights

Our Thoughts

One of the original and arguably still the finest safari lodge in this remote Reserve. The views from all of the rooms are magnificent, and if budget and availability allow, book one of the suites, each of which has its own private pool. The fly-camping is wonderful and the lodge combines well with sister property Greystoke Mahale.

  • Swimming pool
  • Bar
  • Mess area
  • Shop

Despite the remote location, the chefs here produce a wonderful variety of meals, focusing on using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Dining is in a variety of locations and guests will experience at least one dinner under the stars during their stay.

8 rooms in total can be found at the camp, with 5 open-fronted stone and thatch chalets and 3 suites with private plunge pools. They all have their own en-suite bathrooms and mosquito nets around the beds.

  • Game drives
  • Guided bush walks
  • Boat safaris
  • Visits to Stiegler’s Gorge and the Hot Springs
  • Fly camping under the stars

Good for families who are looking for a more adventurous experience. Owing to the remote location, game drives can be longer so best suited to families with older children.
