Nkwali

Overview

Nkwali is located on the banks of the Luangwa on a magnificent meander in the river overlooking the National Park where leopards roam along the bank and can often be spotted from camp. Situated on Robin Pope Safaris’ private land outside the park there is a private game viewing area behind camp as well as exclusive access into the park either by boat or across the pontoon.

The six chalets with bamboo woven walls and thatch roofs offer a rustic luxury opening up to magnificent views of the river as well as open air en-suite bathrooms. The rooms are open fronted with a screen that is pulled across at night.

Nkwali offers understated elegance, seclusion and superb service.

Highlights

Our Thoughts

A traditional bush camp in the style for which Zambia has become renowned – small, exclusive and with world-class game viewing. Once the home of legendary guide Robin Pope, our tip is to book the two-bedroom Robin’s House – not much more expensive than the standard rooms but a lot more private and great for families.

The open-sided central lodge incorporates a comfortable sitting area and small library. Guests usually congregate around the campfire or on the ideally positioned viewing deck next to the bar.On hot afternoons between game drives you may want to lounge around the swimming pool, located next to the thatched dining area overlooking the lagoon.

The thatched dining room at Nkwali overlooks a lagoon where many of the resident animals drink during the day. Breakfast, brunch and lunch are excellent and generous buffets and delicious dinners are served at a long, lantern-lit table, usually under the trees next to the river. The bar at Nkwali is situated on the banks of the river and is built around a massive ebony tree. The bar provides the perfect spot for watching elephant herds cross the Luangwa River.

Nkwali Camp is made up of only six chalets overlooking the river. The A-frame chalets, made of woven bamboo, thatch and stone, are completely open at the front during the day to let the view in and enable you to watch elephant, hippo and other animals at the river from the comfort of your bed or private sitting area. The en-suite bathrooms are partially open to the sky to allow for showers under the stars.
