Africa's Best Family Destinations For 2017

Africa's Best Family Destinations For 2017

If you’re looking to plan a once in a lifetime holiday for your family in 2017 then look no further than Africa. This vast and diverse continent has something to please everyone in your family from incredible wildlife watching opportunities to amazing beach destinations and a plethora of outdoor activities. Here are just a few places we think you should visit with your family in 2017.

Botswana for families
Botswana is one of the best places to go on safari in Africa. In the north of the country lies the world famous Okavango Delta, which is home to large concentrations of wildlife, and Chobe National Park, famous for the huge size of its elephant population. Home to some of the most luxurious and exclusive safari camps in Africa, Botswana doesn't immediately seem like an ideal destination for most families. However, there are a number of areas in the country that are perfectly equipped  to provide young safari-goers with a truly exceptional Africa experience . Great accommodation options for families include Sanctuary Chief’s Camp in Botswana's Okavango Delta, which takes children over six years old and features a a children's room equipped with a PlayStation, a fancy dress corner, foozeball table, and a nature table where guides interact with the children and teach them about the nature around them. The best time to visit Botswana is during the dry season, which lasts from April to October.

Madagascar family holiday
Madagascar is a destination that will almost certainly capture the imaginations of the younger members of your family. The Indian Ocean island offers a unique combination of quirky, weird and fantastical and also benefits from being only two hours ahead of the UK, so jet lag is not an issue. Madagascar also offers a very interactive experience for children, the resident animals are no threat to humans so it is safe to explore on foot and the wildlife is easily accessible. If your children are fans of the Madagascar movies then they will love seeing Lemurs and Chameleons in their natural habitat. For the older ones in your family, there are a plethora of outdoor activities for them to try their hand at including hiking, diving and kayaking. Madagascar is a year round destination, however June to December are the best months to visit.

The best of South Africa for families
South Africa has something for everyone and makes an ideal holiday destination for families with children of all ages. It’s by far the best place to go on safari if you have younger children, as the roads are excellent, which means you can rent a car and set your own pace and schedule. As well as great weather and  plenty of family friendly accommodation  and eating options, South Africa also boasts a huge variety of  activities that you can all enjoy as a family such as malaria free safaris in the Eastern Cape, a plethora of outdoor activities in Kwazulu Natal and long days at the beach at Camps Bay near Cape Town.  South Africa is a year round destination, but the best time to visit is during summer, which runs from November to February.

Namibia family holidays
Namibia offers malaria free regions and some excellent places to combine relaxation with sight-seeing and some gentle wildlife viewing. However, until children are old enough to cope with lengthy overland travel or internal light aircraft flights, or take malaria tablets, we would not  suggest Namibia as a suitable destination for families with very young children. However with a plethora of outdoor activities on offer including sand boarding, hiking and mountain biking it makes an ideal holiday destination for families with teenagers. A number of camps and lodges in Namibia also have two-bedroom ‘family units’, and safari tents or lodge rooms which are large enough to include an extra bed. The best time to visit Namibia is during the dry season, which runs from April to October.
