This 10-night self-drive itinerary takes you on a fascinating journey of discovery, visiting the many highlights of South Africa's breathtaking and diverse KwaZulu Natal province.
Accommodations include: Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, Fugitives' Drift Guesthouse, Amakhosi Safari Lodge and Oyster Box Hotel
Depart on your overnight flight from London Heathrow to Durban
On arrival in Durban, collect your hire car and drive to Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse in the Drakensberg Mountains for a two night stay.
Tucked away in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains, this luxury five-star lodge is for those looking for somewhere remote and romantic. Rightly renowned for its food – a different seven course menu is on offer each night, accompanied by a wide choice of South African wines, this 11-roomed hideaway is gourmet heaven, with even breakfast running to three courses! Guests will find a mountain hike or bike ride essential after such a feast, or time can simply be spent in the craft shops and cafes of the nearby Midland Meander.
Today you will drive from Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse to the battlefields of KwaZulu Natal for a two night stay at Fugitives' Drift Guesthouse.
The first, and arguably, still the best lodge in the Zulu battlefields. The main building is stuffed with artefacts and memorabilia – it is like staying in a museum. Each morning and afternoon excursions are offered to these fascinating historical sights, where skilled guides bring the past to life. Spacious cottages, each with a private veranda, are located at either the Lodge or the Guest House, where there are swimming pools with views across the Buffalo River Gorge.
Today you will drive from Fugitives' Drift to the Amakhosi Private Game Reserve for a two night safari at the Amakhosi Safari Lodge.
An African hideaway in a location which blends savannah, wetlands and mountain, and which offers a true bush experience. On the banks of the Mkuze River, the lodge is visited by a multitude of antelope and birds, while guests can see the Big 5 on game drives and guided walks. Accommodation is in 6 luxurious river suites while the lodge also has a private two-bedroom villa and a sumptuous honeymoon suite. In addition to enjoying visits to a local Zulu village, guests can also participate in unique frog safaris at certain times of the year.
Today you will drive from Amakhosi Safari Lodge to the coast of KwaZulu Natal for a three night stay at the Oyster Box Hotel.
A near-perfect beach location right on the edge of the Indian Ocean, this classically-influenced hotel offers luxury and comfort in great style, and yet is just a five minute walk from the boutiques, restaurants and bars of Umhlanga village. Each of the 86 rooms is the last word in comfort, but choose one with an ocean view so that you can enjoy being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. By day, enjoy everything the beach and sea has to offer including snorkelling, fishing and surfing, and by night luxuriate in the hotel’s restaurants and bars.
Early this morning depart for Durban airport for your scheduled daylight flight on British Airways to London Heathrow, arriving this evening.
