Pumulani’s Retired Dhow Gets a New Job

“Out with the old, in with the new.”  Not quite at Pumulani.

Robin Pope Safaris’ Pumulani Lodge, which rests so effortlessly on the shores of Lake Malawi, is more inclined to recycle than throw things away and the this ethos is applied to almost everything…even its retired dhow.

The creative Pumulani staff have recently transformed their old dhow into a practical snorkelling hut and deck. The beautiful old dhow now lives on with all its character in tact, just with a different function.

Here’s a short snippet of the creative thinking behind the ingenious idea:

“At the beginning of the year we retired our dhow that’s been with us since the very beginning of Pumulani and received a new 10.5m Dhow named Nkhwanzi.

Malawi is famed for its ingenuity and a plan was soon hatched to use our old dhow in a practical way. With the breathtaking views of Lake Malawi from our beach, we decided that we needed a new deck for intimate dinners or just another place for our guests to relax.

Now we didn’t just need a deck, we also needed a new hut to keep all of our watersport equipment. So the plan came together, we would cut the dhow in half and use the top half as our new hut and the rest as our deck.

We’re so glad to have found a use for the old dhow and thus keep it a part of the lodge rather than to say good bye to it for good.”
