Idyllic Island & Safari combinations
Combining your idyllic island stay with an African safari is easy to do and a great way to maximise on the travel time to Africa. We’ve listed our top combinations below to help inspire your ideal safari and island beach escape.
If you’re heading to Tanzania, Zanzibar’s Pemba Island paradise Azura Selous in the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania is the perfect option. The reserve is famed for its massive lion prides, packs of sprightly wild dog and the opportunity to get well off the beaten safari path. Named for the great hunter turned conservationist Sir Frederick Selous, the reserve is Tanzania’s largest and offers some of the most remote game viewing opportunities in East Africa. Fed by the Rufiji River, the terrain is explored by vehicle on game drives, by boat or on foot - all led by expert guides and trackers to ensure you don’t miss a thing.
Singita Sasakwa and North Island, Seychelles
The Serengeti has long been heralded as the best safari destination and Singita Sasakwa is the perfect base from which to explore the animal-rich plains. Perched on a hill overlooking the grassy wilderness below, the lodge has the feel of a majestic colonial house with opulent furnishings combined with chic African style. Heading out to explore is easily done with game drives and even horse-back safaris enabling guests to get truly up close with the wildlife. When not enjoying the outdoors there is the spa, tennis court, pool and a variety of other activities to enjoy along with the superb cuisine and Tanzanian hospitality. After enjoying the delights of the bush, there’s no better place than the Seychelles’ North Island Utopia to escape to for a remote beach retreat. Reached by a short flight to Dar es Salaam with an overnight to connect the following day to Mahe, this luxurious resort is a pioneer in its conservation programmes and the main guest areas were all constructed from sustainable materials. Each spacious villa is designed with privacy in mind and boasts a private beach, swimming pool, extensive deck and uber-luxurious indoor furnishings. This is the perfect place for those seeking seclusion, romance and an impeccable seaside experience. Read our review of North Island here.
&Beyond Ngala Lodge & &Beyond Benguerra Island
South Africa is regarded as an African hub, making the surrounding countries and Indian Ocean Islands easily accessible and combinable. Our favourite combination from here is the Timbavati Game Reserve, synonymous with the best game viewing in South Africa and &Beyond Benguerra Island in Mozambique. The Timbavati Game Reserve is host to a number of smaller private concessions that fit like puzzle pieces to make up one of the most game-rich places on earth. &Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge is nestled into the natural wilderness sheltered by the ancient trees with views out onto the private waterhole where wildlife wanders along throughout the day. The reserve is home to all of the Big Five, but is particularly well known for its elephant, buffalo and rhino as well as its packs of African wild dog. The big cats also abound with leopard and cheetah often encountered. The old-world feel of the lodge compliments the natural surroundings with its colonial antiques, plush furnishings and warm ambiance. After a few days on safari seeking out the resident wildlife there’s no better way to relax than heading to the secluded beaches of Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago, which involves a flight connection at Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (outside Kruger) to Vilanculos in Mozambique. The elegant &Beyond Benguerra Island Lodge is situated in a protected marine reserve that is home to the rare and endangered dugong, and the island offers exceptional diving in addition to the heavenly beaches, forests, wetlands and freshwater lakes in the interior. The lodge has recently been rebuilt and offers a sleek design, luxurious finishings and views out onto the powdery white beaches and turquoise blue waters.
If you are looking for a more out of the norm, and yet easily accessible island experience, we would recommend Madagascar. Accessible via an overnight flight from Paris to Antananarivo, this ‘Island Continent’ has a diversity of wildlife and scenery that is simply astounding. With lush rainforest, mangroves, excellent beaches and abundant marine life you’d be forgiven for thinking that’s all there is on offer. There are also mountains, arid desert areas and some of the planet's most exotic fauna and flora. Exploring Madagascar is best left to the true adventure seeker with a myriad of rough and rewarding experiences for trekking, biking, canoeing and 4x4 enthusiasts.
Nestled on a private island to the north-west of Madagascar in the most picture perfect waters is the Constance Tsarabanjina Resort. Bungalows spill out onto the flawless beach where the private bays and coves can easily be explored. The island makes the ideal base from which to explore the marine life by boat and offers exceptional diving and snorkelling. Fresh seafood is sourced directly from the waters daily and the delicious Malagasy cuisine is a delight. This is the place to head to for that ‘Robinson Crusoe’ feel - but with all the comforts included in a five star resort.
