One of Africa's best-kept secrets, São Tomé and Príncipe is an enchanting island nation off the coast of West Africa, known for the friendly locals and beautiful sea life. The small nation (the second smallest in Africa) which became independent from Portugal in 1975 is made up of two major volcanic islands surrounded by eight small islets and has a lot to offer with its captivating volcanic peaks, brilliant fishing and marine life, and relaxed ‘leve leve’ vibe. The island’s calm, stress-free atmosphere is heightened with the palm-lined beaches and vibrant rainforests. The ecologically fascinating São Tomé and Príncipe known as "the Galapagos of Africa" is home to over 143 species of bird and also perfect for giant leatherback turtle and humpback whale watching opportunities. It's also blessed with pleasant weather all year round, which means that it can be visited at any time of year. However, what makes visiting São Tomé and Príncipe so special is that almost every experience is intimate; the lack of crowds allows visitors to explore and uncover the delights of the island in a personal way.
