Birkenhead House

Overview

The most luxurious resort in the area, offering 11 individually designed rooms and the 6-bedroom villa, perfect for use by a family or group of friends.

The house overlooks two of the finest beaches on Walker Bay, close to the small seaside town of Hermanus with its boutiques and bars, cafes and galleries. It is also near Fernkloof Nature Reserve, which offers great hikes and nature trails, as well as all the ocean joys of Walker Bay, which in season offers some of the best whale and dolphin spotting. All of this can be enjoyed from the lap of luxury at Birkenhead House & Villa, which for those inclined to be less active, also offers a treatment room, comfy lounges and superb food and drink.

Highlights

Our Thoughts

Birkenhead brought a new standard for accommodation to Hermanus when it opened, and it continues to dazzle those lucky enough to stay here. Ask Shane, the mop-haired General Manager, to take you surfing – he knows the waves below the property like the back of his hand.

  • Stunning cliff-top location
  • Gym and treatment room
  • Two swimming pools

At Birkenhead House, world-class cuisine is a matter of course. In true fusion fashion, the food is a subtle mixture of modern African Cuisine, Cape seafood, and traditional French techniques with strong Asian and Italian influences. On offer are homemade breads, ice creams and sorbets, as well as delicacies such as tempura strawberries and fresh local fish and Cape seafood ranging from Marlin, Red Roman and Kabeljou to crayfish and mussels. Soups are a treat with flavours as unusual and exotic as vanilla and butternut.

Only the freshest ingredients are used for lavish meals served in your choice of setting: overlooking the ocean; next to the dual level pool; in the glass fronted dining area; or simply enjoy dining in the privacy of your suite. Menus and meals can be designed to meet guests’ individual palates and requirements.

A total of eleven rooms are found at Birkenhead House, split between Standard, Luxury and Superior Rooms. The luxurious amenities and quality of furnishings remain the same throughout all of the rooms, with the difference coming in their size, location within the house and of course their views out into Walker Bay – a chance to see whales from the room in season.

  • Whale watching
  • Great White Shark cage diving
  • Local wine tours – the Hermanus wine route rivals the better known Stellenbosch/Franschhoek ones
  • Golf – a great choice of quality courses nearby
  • Local nature trails

Very good for families if taken as exclusive use. Activities can be tailored towards children.
