The ideal season depends on your destination within South Africa. The Garden Route and Cape Winelands are at their best from November through to March - warm, sunny days with reliable course conditions. Be aware that July and August bring persistent winds and wetter weather to the Cape. Sun City, Johannesburg and the Kruger/Lowveld region enjoy their best golfing weather from April through October - warm, dry days with clear skies. The summer months - November to February, in this region bring afternoon thunderstorms that, while dramatic, can interrupt play. For a multi-region itinerary, September through November and February through April offer the most consistently favourable conditions across the country.
Travelling with your own clubs is absolutely fine. South Africa's major international airports handle golf bags routinely, and most premium resorts have dedicated storage and cleaning facilities. However if your itinerary includes domestic charter flights to remote safari lodges, (common for Kruger-area combinations), luggage weight restrictions can make travelling with clubs impractical. In this case we strongly recommend hiring clubs locally: the major courses all stock high-quality modern sets, and the hire cost is typically very reasonable by international standards.
Perfectly safe. Courses like Leopard Creek and The Lost City are designed and managed with guest safety as the primary consideration. At Leopard Creek, the course borders the Kruger National Park, and while giraffe, hippo and antelope are regularly visible from the fairways, the playing area itself is fenced and secured. The famous crocodile pool at The Lost City's 13th hole is a contained water feature — atmospheric and memorable, but not a genuine threat. Course rangers and marshals are always present on wildlife-adjacent layouts.
For courses like Fancourt (The Links) and Leopard Creek - both of which have limited tee-time availability and high demand - we recommend securing bookings at least 6-9 months in advance, particularly for peak season travel from December to February. For other courses in the itinerary, and for most luxury lodge reservations, 3-4 months is generally sufficient, though earlier is always better for the highest-demand properties. Our team begins securing tee times and lodge availability the moment your trip is confirmed.
Most premium private courses in South Africa require a valid handicap certificate, (typically 24 or below for men, 36 or below for women), and proof of club membership. Courses such as Leopard Creek and Fancourt (The Links) are particularly strict on this. We advise all clients to ensure their handicap is registered and up to date before travel. If you are a social or casual golfer without an official handicap, we can recommend outstanding courses that do not apply these restrictions, and do not compromise either on scenery or quality.
