Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia and its largest city, with a population of around 3,400,000 people, and also the world's third-highest capital city at 2,355 metres. The city was founded by Ethiopian Emperor Menelik in 1887 around hot springs and its nickname is "new flower" in the Amharic language. The city is a contrast of landscapes, newly built skyscrapers stand on dirt roads whilst global business conferences take place next to traditional street markets.
Addis Ababa is a bustling melting pot of culture, history, festivals and a budding art scene. The sheer business of the city can be daunting, but a visit here allows you to experience true Ethiopia. Make sure that you explore the city's many restaurants, bars and shops or immerse yourself in Ethiopian culture and discover the many churches and diverse architecture, and visit the Ethnographic museum to learn about the many different cultural groups of Ethiopia.
Before leaving central Ethiopia, we recommend a trip outside the city to the region's hot-springs, discovering the volcanic landscape and abundant birdlife of the Awash National Park or trekking on horseback across the grassy plains spotting various species of antelope.
Dry Season - November to February
Wet Season - June to September
Make sure you immerse yourself in the culture of Ethiopia by visiting the many excellent museums and take a journey through Ethiopia's history without even leaving the city.
