Simon has 15 years experience working in travel and has been with Africa Travel since 2007. Whilst he has had many memorable experiences in the Middle East and Asia it is Africa's open spaces, big skies and wildlife that really captures his heart. A keen and accomplished photographer, Simon likes nothing more than being on safari, and top of his personal recommendations are walking safaris in Zambia and taking a hot air balloon trip over Kenya's Masai Mara or the stunning wilderness of Namibia's Damaraland. Away from work if Simon is not running around after his daughter he can usually be found in the kitchen or living the good life in his veggie patch.
What is your favourite place in Africa?
South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. It is an unspoiled wilderness with excellent game viewing and guides and one of the best places to take a walking safari.
What is your most memorable experience in Africa?
Standing on the edge of the Victoria Falls at Livingstone Island in Zambia with the waters of the Zambezi pouring into the chasm below. And seeing a leopard kill a porcupine is unforgettable too!
Where would you like to visit next and why?
I would love to visit Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. Exploring on foot is a superb way to experience the bush and this is a great park for walking safaris. You can also get up close to big game here while canoeing on the Zambezi.
What's your best advice for someone travelling to Africa?
Never miss a game drive when you are on safari. While it may be tempting to stay in bed rather than have an early morning wake up call you should take every opportunity when in the bush as you never know what you might miss. And while you are out, don’t be too focused on just ticking off “the big 5”. There are so many other animals to enjoy not to mention the ever-present and amazingly varied birdlife.
My favourite place in Africa has to be South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. It is an unspoiled wilderness with excellent game viewing and guides and one of the best places to take a walking safari.
