Namibia is an extraordinary place – magnificent, magical and mysterious. Inland there is the drama of Damaraland with its endangered desert elephant and rhino, while at Sossusvlei, one of the oldest and driest eco-systems, climbing to the top of the highest sand dunes is a must. Then there are the famous salt pans of the Etosha National Park with their abundance of game, and finally the Fish River Canyon in the south – second only to the Grand Canyon in size. When it comes to accommodation, Namibia like its landscapes does not disappoint and has options to suit every kind of budget or taste. Here are our top five Namibia resorts and lodges.
Located in a vast valley in the Namibian desert, Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp offers guests the opportunity to explore a wonderfully remote part of the Skeleton Coast. A variety of activities are also available to guests staying at the camp including game drives, nature walks and scenic flights.
&Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is an indulgent retreat from which to explore the huge red dunes at Sossusvlei and revel in the peace and tranquillity of this pristine desert environment. The views of the mountains and desert plains from the camp are truly breath-taking and expert guides are on hand to show you the animal and plant life that survives in this arid environment and San Bushman cave paintings. Visits to the famous dunes at Sossusvlei and quad bike trails are also available and a resident astronomer will guide you through the clear night skies at the lodge's observatory. Accommodation consists of 10 luxurious with large windows and a veranda to make the most of the enchanting views. There is even a skylight above the bed for star gazing!
Desert Rhino Camp is in the vast Palmwag concession, an area of flat topped mountains, rocky hills and plains in the ruggedly beautiful Damaraland region. This intimate camp has just eight tents with an open sided lounge and dining tent and a plunge pool to help you cool down in the heat of the day. The area around the camp is home to the largest free roaming population of black rhino in Africa and the chance to track these desert adapted animals on foot is a highlight of any stay here. Run in conjunction with the Save the Rhino Trust a stay at Desert Rhino Camp not only offers a great safari experience but also contributes to the preservation of these endangered animals.
Situated on the western side of Fish River Canyon the lodge is part of the Canyon Nature Park, a vast desert wilderness of parched plains and rugged, flat topped mountains. The stunning views of the canyon can be enjoyed from all parts of the lodge including the swimming pool, lounge and dining deck and also from the 20 simple, modernist chalets which feature large glass doors and verandas to make the most of the awe inspiring vistas. The views are especially spectacular in the mornings when you can lie in bed and watch as the rising sun slowly lights up the canyon below. The lodge is also the only accommodation option in the area to offer day visits into the Fish River Canyon from where you can enjoy a guided 4x4 trip or a full day hike.
Situated along the southern boundary of Etosha National Park in the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve. Ongava Lodge is the ideal place from which to base yourself when visiting Etosha. Set on a hill with seemingly endless views across the reserve, accommodation at the lodge consists of 14 brick and thatch chalets with ensuite facilities and their own private covered verandas. Meal times at Ongava are a special affair and are either served in the main dining area under thatch with a view over the camp's water hole, or on the dining deck under the stars.
