A Review Of The Last Word Constantia

It has been a while since I last visited Cape Town’s southern suburbs - most often my trips to the city just include the tourist-heavy areas of the V&A Waterfront, City Bowl and Camps Bay, but as we drove past Kirstenbosch Gardens and on through the leafy areas of Newlands and Constantia, it felt like the city was exhaling.

I was spending the night at The Last Word Constantia, a long-time favourite of Africa Travel. It is an elegant 5-star boutique hotel, located in the Constantia Valley, which offers a secluded and peaceful retreat yet is within easy reach of the city’s attractions.



The property has 9 spacious (exceptionally large in fact!) bedrooms, including a two-bedroom suite, perfect for families. Many suites open onto a private patio, with easy access to the beautifully-manicured gardens and pool area. The warm and friendly staff made us feel at home and were helpful in recommending local attractions and restaurants.

We took their advice and headed to Peddlars Restaurant for lunch. A casual and easy-going pub serving tasty meals, it is located right next door, with private access between the hotel and restaurant.

After lunch, we took a 5 minute taxi ride to do some shopping at Constantia Village, a small, relaxed village square with a mix of high-end boutiques and everyday essentials.



We then headed to Constantia’s wine region, a first for me, where I was blown away by the exceptional wine and equally outstanding views. It’s hard to believe that in such a busy city sits the county’s oldest and most prestigious wine region. Quick fact - Groot Constantia is South Africa's oldest wine farm, established in 1685 by Simon van der Stel.

All in all, we had a wonderful stay in Constantia. I will certainly be visiting the southern suburbs again next time I am in Cape Town and I encourage you to do the same. Yes the Waterfront is great and is at the heart of most of the tourist action, but it is always busy, busy, busy, and doesn’t give the visitor much space or time to breathe.

Instead use the Last Word Constantia as the place to base yourself, and take advantage of the convenient location and the very best in South African hospitality.
