Where To Go On Holiday This October Half Term
Are you thinking of going away this October half term? We've put together a short guide on the best places to visit in Africa over this period to help you choose the perfect holiday destination for you.
The world’s fourth largest island, Madagascar is a vast magical land just waiting to be discovered. Rich in flora and fauna, much of which is found nowhere else on earth, a typical trip can include the lemurs of the Perinet Reserve, the baobabs of Morondava, the whales of Sainte Marie and the narrow streets and alleyways of charming Antananarivo. October is a pretty perfect time to visit Madagascar as the weather is excellent and there are lots of cute baby lemurs around. Snorkelling is also sublime at this time of year.
South Africa is a country that has everything to offer the traveller – incredible wildlife, world class cities, glorious beaches and dramatic scenery. October is a great month to visit the country, in the Eastern Cape, the nights are getting warmer and this is an affordable time to visit as winter rates still apply. Another option is to take a trip along the Garden Route. The flowers are out in full bloom all the way from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape. And if flowers aren’t your thing, whale watching is at its peak and the game-viewing is great in the game reserves too!
The Seychelles are ideally positioned for doing nothing except relaxing in the sun or playing on or in the sea from some of the most unspoiled, pristine beaches in the world. It's an ideal destination for families as no vaccinations are required, there are few dangerous animals and many of the hotels have kid's clubs. There is also only a 3 hour difference from the UK meaning less disruption to sleeping patterns. October is one of the best times to visit the Seychelles, as it's usually dryer and less humid than other times of year. There's also a high chance you might witness the endangered hawksbill and green turtles laying their eggs.
Tanzania is an extraordinary mix of vast open plains stocked with great game and a land of spices, souks, pristine beaches and bazaars. October is a great time of year to visit Tanzania as the main parks are still in their peak seasons and the temperatures are much less extreme than in places like Botswana and Zambia. Ruaha and Katavi are great places to visit during this period, as is the Serengeti, which sees an increase in river crossings as the migrations herds begin their journey south. October is also a great time to visit Zanzibar, as the weather is warm and rainfall is almost non-existent, making it excellent for activities like snorkelling.
Mozambique is renowned for the magnificence of its white sand and pristine beaches which edge the Indian Ocean. A true Robinson Crusoe hideaway, it is the ideal holiday combination with a safari. October is a fantastic month to visit the country, as weather at the coast is sunny, dry and hot (30 to 34 degrees). The water is clear and calm during these months, creating superb conditions for diving and getting close to the fascinating marine life. It's also a great time for whale watching, as the humpback whales make their epic annual migration from Antarctica to warmer waters off East Africa to have their young.
