Mchenja, named so because of the grove of ebony trees that it occupies on the bank of the Luangwa River, is a superb location for those looking to experience an up-market tented safari experience in the South Luangwa. The open air bathrooms and Victorian style baths overlooking the river are very popular and lend a truly colonial feel to the camp. It is a particularly good location for night drives and walks, with the guides using their encyclopaedic knowledge of the plants and animals to really bring the whole bush experience together. To round off a long day exploring the park, dinner under the stars on the river bank is a magical experience.

Our Thoughts

For those searching a luxurious tented experience in the South Luangwa, Mchenja really fits the bill. The superb location on the banks of the Luangwa River makes for excellent game viewing and the Victorian style baths overlooking the river are immensely popular.

Fantastic food is a feature of a stay at Mchenja, with brunches being taken in the shaded lounge area and, unless the weather is prohibitive, dinners taken on the river bank under the stars.

Mchenja is a wonderfully luxurious tented camp, with just 5 octagonal tents. They are all lovely and spacious, with open air bathrooms and Victorian style baths looking out on to the Luangwa River.
