Exotic Zambia Holidays With Africa Travel

About Zambia

A holiday to Zambia takes you into a country of protected wilderness, vast lakes, wetlands and spectacular waterfalls. Its very name comes from the Zambezi River - translated as “God’s friend” - making the land itself a blessing.

The scenic splendour of exotic Zambia is unrivalled in Africa, thanks to the Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya or “The Smoke that Thunders”, the mighty Zambezi River, and two of the largest wildlife sanctuaries on the continent: South Luangwa National Park and Kafue National Park.

Zambia is also widely regarded as the best country in Africa for walking safaris. Exploring the bush on a walking safari gives a completely different perspective to game viewing from a vehicle, and approaching the big game on foot is truly exhilarating.

Zambia holidays are increasingly popular among discerning travellers. Camps and lodges focus on a small, personalised scale, ensuring that every Zambia trip feels private, luxurious and truly unforgettable.

Interesting Things To Do In Zambia

The Victoria Falls is the highlight of any holiday to Zambia, straddling the border with Zimbabwe. First seen by explorer David Livingstone, who described them as “scenes so lovely they must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”, the Falls remain Zambia’s most extraordinary natural spectacle.

Travellers typically spend two or three nights here, enjoying guided tours, canoeing trips, fishing, helicopter flights and sunset cruises on the Zambezi River. Adventurous visitors can even swim in the legendary Devil’s Pool at the very edge of the Falls.

Accommodation ranges from the elegant Royal Livingstone by Anantara and Avani Victoria Falls Resort to the romantic riverside setting of Tongabezi Lodge and the unique Sindabezi Island Camp.

South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park is a must on any Zambia holiday package. Centred on the Luangwa River, this reserve delivers some of the best game viewing in Southern Africa. Lions, leopards and African wild dogs thrive here, alongside herds of elephants, zebra and giraffe.

The park is also a paradise for birders, with over 400 species recorded, including colonies of southern carmine bee-eaters.

It was the original region for walking safaris when former hunter Norman Carr wanted to take visitors to see the animals in as natural a way as possible, and today the area boasts Africa’s best-trained guides for guided walks, where the visitor is always accompanied by both a guide and an armed scout.

Game drives are naturally a big part of any stay here and in season boat trips along the Luangwa River are also on offer.

Accommodation suits every type of traveller: luxury safari camps like Chinzombo, rustic bushcamps such as Luwi and Kakuli, family retreats like Robin’s House, and social lodges such as Flatdogs.

Lower Zambezi National Park

Lower Zambezi National Park lies along the lower reaches of the Zambezi River opposite Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools. Its permanent water sources create one of Africa’s richest wildlife habitats, where safaris include game drives, canoe trips, motorboat excursions and guided walks.

Accommodation offers something for everyone: Sausage Tree Camp and Potato Bush are long-time favourites, Anabezi Camp brings modern luxury, Chongwe River House offers a unique family-friendly escape, and Old Mondoro provides an intimate rustic experience.

Kafue National Park

Kafue National Park covers 5.5 million acres, making it one of Africa’s largest and most unspoilt reserves. With very few lodges, it offers a true wilderness safari. The park is fed by the Lunga, Lufupa and Kafue rivers, which flood the Busanga Plains seasonally, creating spectacular game-viewing opportunities.

Wildlife sightings here are exceptional, with high densities of lion, wild dog and cheetah, plus herds of puku, lechwe, buffalo and rare antelope such as roan and oribi. Birders will find more than 500 species, from Ross’s turaco to the elusive locust finch.

For safari purists, Kafue is a dream come true, with very few lodges in a huge area of outstanding game viewing with some rare sightings not seen in many other parts of Africa.

For a unique perspective, some camps also offer balloon rides over the reserve.

The real beauty of a luxury holiday to Zambia is its seamless connectivity. Daily multiple flights from Johannesburg, plus easy road and boat transfers to Botswana make multi-country itineraries effortless.

Zambia holidays often combine Victoria Falls, the Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa, creating a circuit of three distinct safari experiences. Kafue links in perfectly with both Lusaka and Livingstone, rounding out an exotic Zambia holiday package with adventure, wilderness and culture.
